It’s very difficult to ease new rings over pistons without having them drop into the wrong grooves, not to mention that it’s even quite easy to break them during such a struggle.  The jaws of these ring expanding pliers are designed to grip the ring in the area of the ring gap and enable you to safely spread each ring just far enough to slide them into the correct groove.
