Improved forward adjusting collar
Universal apparently realized, as many of you have, that the notches on the original adjusting collar for the forward clutch assembly of the reversing gear are a bit too far apart for an ideal adjustment. In many cases, moving the collar one notch results in the forward clutch assembly going from slipping to being needlessly tight. Unfortunately, this problem was recognized so late in the production of the Atomic 4 that only the very latest engines (serial numbers approximately of 200,000 and higher) have the improved collars. The best time to install one of these collars is during the time of an overhaul, since replacement of this part requires the removal and disassembly of the reversing gear cage assembly. Step by step instructions for disassembly of the gear cage assembly are included with each collar. Installation should not take more than an hour at a local machine shop.
