Alternator – 55 amp (API) (new). Replaces Motorola 35 amp alternator
This alternator from API is rated at 55 amps. It is internally regulated. It is ignition protected in accordance with SAE J1171
The alternator’s 2″ mounting foot is designed to fit in the standard late model lifting eye/alternator mounting bracket. Please refer to product number OVEL_02_221 for a photo of the standard late model mounting bracket.
The pulley on the 55 amp API alternator is very slightly larger than the pulley on the original Motorola 35 amp alternator. For this reason, the preferred belt size is 26″ as opposed to the 25″ used on the Motorola (see our product number IGLM_09_34.1).
Also, since the distance between the standard alternator pulley and the distributor cap is already very close, you may have to loosen the two head nuts and move the bracket a bit to keep the API pulley from touching the distributor cap. There’s usually more than enough “wiggle room” between the holes in the bracket and the head studs to reposition the alternator as necessary. Re-torque the head nuts to between 30 and 35 foot-pounds. Or, if you prefer, you can take an adjustable wrench and bend the ears on the lifting eye bracket very slightly to gain the necessary clearance.
